JOINT STATEMENT FROM WISE OWL TRUST AND FORWARD AS ONE CHURCH OF ENGLAND MULTI-ACADEMY TRUST

Exploring the potential of Wise Owl Trust joining Forward As One Multi Academy Trust

Wise Owl Trust and Forward As One Church of England Multi-Academy Trust are pleased to confirm that their Boards have agreed to formally explore the possibility of Wise Owl Trust joining Forward As One Multi Academy Trust.

This exploratory phase follows a period of constructive dialogue between leaders and trustees, during which strong alignment in values, culture and strategic ambition has been identified.

Forward As One has been led with clarity and integrity, grounded in its distinctive Christian ethos and commitment to serving its communities with aspiration and care. Wise Owl Trust is rooted in its RESPECT values — Resilience, Empathy, Self-awareness, Excellence, Communication and Teamwork — and serves richly diverse communities with a strong culture of inclusion and high expectations.

Both Trusts share a common moral purpose: to ensure every child flourishes academically, socially and personally, within schools that are safe, ambitious and community-centred.

The Boards believe that this exploration is a responsible and forward-looking step, particularly as Forward As One prepares for leadership succession. Subject to approval by the Department for Education to proceed, Sophie Murfin, current CEO of Wise Owl Trust would become CEO. This presents an opportunity to secure long-term stability, strengthen school improvement capacity and build collective resilience in an evolving educational landscape.

If progressed, this would:

  • Protect and uphold the Christian ethos and foundation of Forward As One

  • Safeguard the distinctive identity and inclusive culture of Wise Owl schools

  • Increase operational and school improvement capacity

  • Broaden professional development and career opportunities for staff

  • Strengthen SEND, attendance and inclusion expertise across all schools

At this stage, no final decision has been made. The Boards are undertaking a period of due diligence, stakeholder engagement and careful consideration before determining next steps.

Both Trusts are committed to transparent communication throughout this process. Staff, parents, governors, diocesan partners and wider stakeholders will be kept informed and given opportunities to ask questions and provide feedback. Further updates will be shared as discussions progress.
